Cedarburg High School
College Application Process
Naviance Family Connection

-
Obtain your application online from the post-secondary school's website. Some may have their own application form to fill out, while others will use the Common Application (www.commonapp.org).
-
Complete the online application and pay the college's application fee.
-
Using Naviance Family Connection, upload the colleges into your account so teachers and counselors can see where you have applied.
-
Ask teachers for letters of recommendation, if necessary. Make sure to ask them in advance, giving them at least 2 weeks to write a letter. Ask them in person first, and if approved, "request" them via Family Connection. Remember to thank them for writing your letter.
-
Send standardized test scores to the schools you applied to. If your school(s) will accept our copy of the standardized test, indicate that on the form mentioned below.
-
Finally, complete a Naviance Family Connection College Application form (yellow sheet found in the Counseling Department) along with the transcript fee ($5.00 for each college you apply to) and bring to the Counseling Office. This will indicate to the Counseling Office that you would like your transcript and letters of recommendation sent to your schools (will be sent electronically). Also, inform the Counseling Office if you would like all materials sent at once or as they come into the Counseling Office.
Note: Some schools require SAT Subject tests, so be sure to check your schools.
*To send scores to your schools, go to www.act.org or www.collegeboard.com
*Be sure to watch your application deadlines!! Some schools have scholarship deadlines that may come earlier than their regular admissions deadline.
*See your counselor during any of the above steps if you have any questions or if you encounter problems.
ACT/SAT Scores
You will need to send official copies of your ACT and/or SAT scores to complete the college application process. You must ACT and/or SAT to request that your test scores be sent to colleges/universityies directly from the individual testing agency.
ACT: www.act.org
SAT I and/or SAT II: www.collegeboard.com
Upon request, the Counseling Office will send a high school copy along with your transcript to get the application process started. However, some colleges and universities will not accept the high school copy at any point in the application process (UW-Madison, UW-Green Bay, and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities among them).
Letters of Recommendation
www.cedarburg.k12.wi.us/letterofrecommendationform/
If a letter of recommendation is needed from a teacher or school counselor, we strongly suggest that the student completes a Request for Letter of Recommendation form and gives it to the letter writer no less than two weeks in advance of when it's needed. Students do need to ask a teacher in a face-to-face conversation then electronically request through their Naviance Family Conncection account.
General consensus indicates that it takes approximately two hours to craft a well-written letter for a student. Because such letters are usually written outside of the school day, etiquette would call for a thank-you letter or card to the letter writer.
College Essays
The Counseling Office encourages students to make an appointment with the CHS Writing Center Director (located in the IMC) for assistance with essays. The followng website provides the do's and don'ts and sample essays:
