ECCP & SCN Programs

Early College Credit Program (ECCP)

The Early College Credit Program (ECCP) allows all high school students who meet certain requirements to take one or more courses at an institution of higher education for high school and/or college credit. Under ECCP, “Institution of higher education” means an institution within the University of Wisconsin system, a tribally-controlled college, or a private, nonprofit institution of higher education within Wisconsin.

Start College Now (SCN)

The Start College Now (SCN) Program allows students who have completed 10th grade and meet certain requirements to take one or more courses at a Wisconsin technical college for high school and/or college credit.

High school students apply for ECCP by completing an application prior to October 1 for spring semester classes, February 1 for summer classes, or March 1 for fall classes. Students apply for SCN by submitting an application by October 1 for spring semester classes and by March 1 for fall classes. Students can pick up and return applications at the Counseling Office.

Although these programs are for current high school students, state law requires districts to provide information about both programs to all students in grades 8-11 by October 1 each year.

The Cedarburg School District has two policies addressing ECCP and SCN: Board Policy 2271, Early College Credit Program, and Board Policy 2271.01, Start College Now; the provisions for each are below.

Eligible Students

Students attending Wisconsin public and private schools, not concurrently enrolled in the Start College Now Program. Note: Students cannot enroll in both ECCP and SCN in the same semester.

Eligible Grades and Institutions

Allows students in grades 9-12 to take courses at a higher education institution for high school and/or college credit.

Deadline to Submit the Notification of Intent

Students must submit the ECCP Notification of Intent form to the District by:

March 1st (for fall courses)
October 1st (for spring courses)
February 1st (for summer courses)

Review of Requested Course(s)

The District determines course comparability, fulfillment of graduation requirements, and any high school credits earned.

Deadline for Notifying Student

The District must notify students of approval and/or rejection of desired courses before the semester in which the pupil will be enrolled begins.

Transportation

Student/parent is responsible for any transportation costs for attending course(s). Note: funding is available to assist in transportation costs for families in need.

Fees & Books

The district covers fees, books, and materials for non-comparable courses taken for high school credit. Families are responsible for any fees associated with personal items (background checks, clothing, name badges, medical testing).

High School Credit Only (Fulfills Graduation Requirements)

No tuition charged to students for non-comparable courses.

High School & College Credit (Fulfills Graduation Requirements)

No tuition charged to students for non-comparable courses.

College Credit Only (Does NOT Fulfill Graduation Requirement)

Students are responsible for 25% of tuition for non-comparable courses.

Failing a Course

If a student fails a course, the district will request reimbursement.

District Offers a Comparable Course

Students are responsible for 100% of the costs if they take comparable courses for high school credit.

Review of Requested Course(s)

The District determines whether a course in which the pupil will be enrolled does not meet high school graduation requirements and whether the course is comparable to one offered in the school district.

Deadline for Notifying Student

The District must notify students of approval and/or rejection at least 30 days prior to the semester in which the student would be enrolled.

Student/parent is responsible for any transportation costs for attending course(s).

How to Apply

Talk with your high school counselor to see if it's a good fit for you. They will consider how the class aligns with your academic plans and whether you meet the prerequisite(s) for taking a college-level class. You can also obtain an ECCP participation form in the counseling office.
